The present study confirmed the good performance of the GS automated pan coating system in obtaining enteric coated pellets by a powder layering technique using aqueous solutions. It demonstrated the importance of an accurate selection of both the layering powder and the aqueous binder formulations, in particular when the drug must be treated with surfactant in order to increase the wet-ability. Moreover, during the initial formulation trials, the careful evaluation of the process variables was essential to optimize the powder layering process.
